Exchange interests Hebbian learning represents a biologically inspired approach for neural network training. We propose to exploit features extracted from neural networks, trained with Hebbian approaches, in order to solve image retrieval tasks. Specifically, we aim to address the issue of learning with scarce data, sample efficient learning, and few/one shot learning. Since Hebbian approaches are unsupervised, they can take advantage of unabeled data. This suggests a semi-supervised learning scenario in which Hebbian pre-training on unsupervised samples is followed by supervised fine-tuning on labeled samples. The approach can be tested in various sample efficiency regimes, i.e. with increasing scarcity of labeled data, including regimes of few/one-shot learning. Finally, different variants of Hebbian methods, as well as different datasets, can be explored.

Organisation short profile
PhD student in Computer Science at University of Pisa, with a Master Degree in Computer Engineering. I am doing my research activity at CNR-ISTI. My research interests are focused on bio-inspired approaches to machine learning, in particular Hebbian learning and Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs). I have recently published a paper (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neunet.2021.08.003) showing that Hebbian methods can be applied in a semi-sueprvised fashion in order to tackle the issue of learning from scarce data. I am currently exploring this research direction further, considering both other strategies to integrate bio-inspired methods with classical supervised methods, as well as applications of Hebbian learning to image retrieval tasks. I mainly use the Python programming language, and in particular the Pytorch library, but I am also comfortable with Java and C/C++.

Organisation short profile
I have completed a Master of Science in Autonomous Systems at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, Germany, in 2019. My main areas of study were deep learning as well as image and video analysis. Since 2020 I am working as a researcher at Fraunhofer IAIS, focusing on AI-based video content analysis. My main focus lies on video segmentation, key-frame extraction and object detection, using deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and Tensorflow for implementations. I am currently working on building a PhD topic around self-supervised learning and looking into the use of more generalized feature extraction models, e.g., for knowledge transfer to down-stream tasks.

Exchange interests In my stay at the University of Amsterdam I plan to collaborate with Prof. Evangelos Kanoulas (UofA) on themes related to the application of technology-assisted review (TAR) techniques to supporting the production of systematic reviews (SRs). TAR is a class of machine-learning-based techniques whose goal is to maximize the cost-effectiveness of human annotators who need to review (i.e., check the correctness of labels attributed by automatic classifiers to) a large set of textual documents. While TAR has had many application in the legal domain, there are still a number of problems that hinder their application to the production of SRs. In particular, we plan to extend MINECORE, an existing TAR framework based on joint risk minimization for multiple review criteria, to handling non-linear cost functions, an extension that is sorely needed for allowing the application of MINECORE to the world of SRs.

Organisation short profile
I have a MSc Degree in Digital Humanities from the University of Pisa (Italy), and I am now a 2nd year PhD student in Computer Science at the same university. The topic of my PhD work is risk-minimization algorithms for Technology-Assisted Review (TAR) and their application to textual documents. TAR systems are machine-learning-based, "human-in-the-loop" systems, whose main goal is that of minimizing the effort of reviewers (i.e., human annotators who need to check the correctness of labels attributed by automatic classifiers to a large set of textual documents) as well as maximizing the effectiveness of the review process. On this topic I have recently published a paper on the ACM Transactions on Information Systems journal (https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3433164). I have a good knowledge of the Python programming language (including libraries such as PyTorch, Scikit-Learn, Numpy, Pandas) as well as a good background in the Java, Golang, and C languages.
